Why here
Blue Ridge is a town of 1,300 in the North Georgia mountains, the end of the line for the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway. The town sits on the Toccoa River, which is one of Georgia's best trout fisheries, and the surrounding Chattahoochee National Forest has 300 miles of trails. The main street is 1900s storefronts, with a focus on antiques rather than tourist tat. Lake Blue Ridge is 10 minutes away, and the fall color in October is among the best in the South.
Blue Ridge was a railroad and logging town that hung on when the timber ran out, and the 1900s main street is intact because it never got the growth that would have torn it down. The town sits at the end of the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway, a vintage train that runs 26 miles along the Toccoa River to the twin towns of McCaysville, Georgia and Copperhill, Tennessee, where you can stand with one foot in each state. The Toccoa, cold and stocked, is why anglers come, and the Chattahoochee National Forest, 300 miles of trail, is why hikers do.
A weekend in Blue Ridge is a train-and-trout weekend. Ride the scenic railway to McCaysville and back, fish or float the Toccoa, hike to the swinging bridge, and pick apples at Mercier Orchards. Come April through June or October for the fall color. Two nights lets you add Lake Blue Ridge for a swim and a sunset.
