The short version

Small towns near Oklahoma City worth a 48-hour trip

Oklahoma City is the most overlooked weekend base in the southern Plains, and the towns around it are the reason. Within 90 minutes you can walk a Land Run capital of pressed-brick Victorians, swim in a spring-fed lake ringed by cobblestone cottages, or float a travertine creek inside a national park area older than the Park Service itself. These are weekend trips from Oklahoma City built on history, cold springs, and short drives.

North is Guthrie, 35 minutes up I-35, the first capital of Oklahoma Territory. When the government moved to Oklahoma City in 1910, Guthrie stopped building and never started again, which left one of the largest urban historic districts in the country more or less intact. Southwest is Medicine Park, 85 minutes out, Oklahoma's first resort town, a village of 400 red cobblestone cottages at the gate of the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, where bison and longhorn graze under a granite peak you can drive to the top of. South is Sulphur, 80 minutes down I-35, built around 32 mineral springs the federal government protected in 1902 as Platt National Park, now Chickasaw National Recreation Area, with Little Niagara falls and a travertine creek kids swim in all summer.
