Los Angeles is a famously hard city to leave, but the payoff for doing it is big. Within a two-to-three-hour radius you can stand in a pine forest, walk a Danish village, watch the sunset paint a mountain valley pink, or eat apple pie in an 1870s gold rush town. And inside 30 minutes, three close-in city escapes, Pasadena, Burbank, and Glendale, give you gilded-age museums, working studio backlots, and the largest Armenian community in America. These are weekend trips from Los Angeles that feel nothing like LA, and that is exactly the point.
Our Los Angeles escapes lean on three directions. North up the 101 and CA-33 brings Ojai (90 minutes, orange groves and the pink moment) and Solvang (2.5 hours, windmills and Santa Ynez wine). South and inland delivers San Juan Capistrano (1 hour, the oldest neighborhood in Orange County, train-accessible) and Julian (2 hours, apples and gold mines at 4,200 feet).
