Why here

San Juan Capistrano is the oldest town in Orange County, founded in 1776 around the seventh of the 21 California missions. The cliff swallows return every March 19. The Los Rios district is the oldest continuously inhabited street in California. And the new River Street Marketplace has turned the historic district into a destination for curated retail and modern dining. You can take the train here from LA Union Station, 70 minutes, no traffic, no car needed.

The mission, Mission San Juan Capistrano, the Jewel of the Missions, was the seventh founded by Father Junipero Serra and once held the largest stone church in North America before the 1812 earthquake collapsed its dome during Mass, killing 40 worshippers. The ruined Great Stone Church is still the most photographed structure in the town, and the Serra Chapel is the oldest building in California still in continuous use. Around the mission, the Los Rios Historic District runs 31 homes dating to the 1790s, built for the mission's Acjachemen workers and Spanish soldiers, and is the oldest residential street in the state.

What makes San Juan Capistrano work as a weekend is that the whole thing is walkable and train-accessible. The Amtrak Pacific Surfliner and Metrolink deposit you at the 1895 depot, and the mission, Los Rios, and the new River Street Marketplace are all within a 10-minute walk. The 2024 Marketplace, with Free People, Tecovas, and a full bar in a restored citrus warehouse, is the modern layer that finally gave the town a reason to stay past the mission tour.
