The short version

Small towns near Cleveland worth a 48-hour trip

Cleveland is the best base in Ohio for small towns that other travel sites skip: a village with a 20-foot waterfall in the middle of its own main street, a canal town that sits inside a national park, and a college town that was a documented stop on the Underground Railroad. All three are under 45 minutes, and none of them require a full tank of gas.

Chagrin Falls, 30 minutes east, grew up around mills in the 1830s and now has a waterfall dropping through downtown beside a popcorn shop that has been in business since the 1870s. Peninsula, 35 minutes south, is a canal-era village of about 600 inside Cuyahoga Valley National Park, with the Towpath Trail at Lock 29, the scenic railroad depot in the middle of town, and Brandywine Falls ten minutes away. Oberlin, 45 minutes southwest, was founded in 1833 and admitted Black students by 1835; the free Allen Memorial Art Museum holds about 15,000 works and the conservatory plays hundreds of mostly free concerts a year.
