The Bay Area crowds thin fast once you cross the Golden Gate or head north up 101. Within two to three hours you reach foggy Mendocino headlands, Russian river redwoods at Guerneville, the hidden coastal village of Bolinas, and the hot-springs wine town of Calistoga. These are weekend trips from San Francisco built on coast, forest, and slow small towns.
Head north and the options stack up quickly. Calistoga (2 hours) is the hot-springs and wine base at the top of Napa Valley. Mendocino (3 hours) is the dramatic-headlands town that looks like a New England fishing village dropped on the Pacific. Guerneville (1.5 hours) sits on the Russian River among old-growth redwoods.
