Why here

Bolinas is a town that famously removes highway signs pointing to it, the locals prefer to stay hidden. It's a one-road, one-cafe, one-beach kind of place on a peninsula north of San Francisco, with a lagoon full of harbor seals and a beach that stretches for a mile with no development. It's the anti-Carmel.

Bolinas is the town that fought development and won. The residents have, for decades, taken down the highway signs that point the way, which is why the turnoff from Highway 1 is unmarked, and the town has stayed a one-cafe, one-beach place on a peninsula of the Point Reyes National Seashore. The Bolinas Lagoon, on the east side, is a harbor seal rookery and a stop on the Pacific Flyway for migrating birds, and the beach, Agate and Brighton, runs for a mile with no buildings behind it. The town was a 1900s summer resort for San Franciscans and never outgrew it, which is the point.

A weekend in Bolinas is a nothing-and-everything weekend. Walk the lagoon and the beach at low tide, eat at the Coast Cafe, watch the harbor seals, and bring a book. Come April through October when the fog lifts. There is only one place to stay in town, the Coast Cafe & Inn, three rooms above the only restaurant, book ahead or day-trip from Stinson Beach.
