Why here

Calistoga sits at the north end of Napa Valley, founded in 1860 by Sam Brannan, who modeled it on Saratoga Springs, New York. He mispronounced it 'Calistoga' and the name stuck. It's the only town in Napa with natural hot springs, and the mud baths, volcanic ash mixed with mineral water, are the reason tourists came here before wine. The town is walkable, 4 blocks, with tasting rooms that are a fraction of the prices in Yountville or St. Helena to the south. Old Faithful of California, a geothermal geyser, erupts every 30 minutes.

Calistoga is the oldest resort town in Napa and the last stop up the valley. Sam Brannan, California's first millionaire, founded it in 1860 on the hot springs that bubble up here, and built it as a spa resort on the Saratoga model, with the mud baths, volcanic ash mixed with mineral water, that are still the town's signature. The wine came later, and Calistoga, at the top of the valley, has the cheapest tasting rooms and the most relaxed feel of any Napa town, with Castello di Amorosa, a hand-built 13th-century Tuscan castle, the surprise attraction. Old Faithful of California, the geothermal geyser that erupts every 30 minutes, is one of three such geysers in the world, and the Petrified Forest, west of town, is a 3.4-million-year-old fossil forest.

A weekend in Calistoga is a mud-bath-and-wine weekend. Book a mud bath at Indian Springs or Dr. Wilkinson's, do a tasting at Castello di Amorosa, watch Old Faithful, and eat at Evangeline. Come March through May or September through November, summer is hot and crowded. Two nights lets you add a drive up to the Petrified Forest and the northern wineries.
