Las Vegas weekends escape the Strip in two directions: northeast into Utah for red-rock national-park gateway towns, and southeast to a dam-era lake town. Within two to three hours you reach the entrance of Zion, a Hoover Dam reservoir village, and a Utah desert outpost. These are weekend trips from Las Vegas built on red rock, canyons, and reservoirs.
Springdale (2.5 hours northeast, just over the Utah line) is the gateway town to Zion National Park, a one-street village backed by the Watchman rock formation. St. George (2 hours) is the larger Utah base just past the border, with red-rock trail systems in town. Boulder City (40 minutes southeast) is the Hoover-Dam company town that refused the casinos, sitting on Lake Mead with a walkable historic main street.

Springdale
Zion Canyon Scenic Drive
Free with park entry, $20 per vehicle. Take the free shuttle 9 miles up the canyon. Get off at the Temple of Sinawava and hike the Riverside Walk, 2 miles round trip.
Boulder City
Hoover Dam
$10 parking, $30 for the powerplant tour. 726 feet tall, the dam was built in 5 years during the Depression. The tour takes you 530 feet down into the canyon wall to see the generators. Book ahead.
St. George
Snow Canyon State Park
$15 per vehicle. 7,400 acres of red and white sandstone, lava flows, and lava tubes. Hike the Petrified Dunes trail, 1.5 miles. The Pioneer Names trail has 19th-century pioneer signatures in volcanic rock.
Overton
Valley of Fire State Park
$15 entry. Nevada's oldest state park. Drive the 10-mile scenic road, stop at the Beehives, Atlatl Rock (petroglyphs, 2,000 years old), and Elephant Rock. Hike Fire Wave Trail, 1.5 miles. Best Oct-Apr, avoid summer 110+ heat.
