Why here
St. George is the largest city in southwestern Utah, 2 hours from Las Vegas, surrounded by red sandstone bluffs. It was settled by Mormon pioneers in 1861 to grow cotton, and the 1867 tabernacle still stands. Today it is the base for Snow Canyon State Park, the west rim of Zion, and the St. George Marathon, the fastest in the US. The desert heat is real, 100+ in summer, but fall and spring are ideal.
St. George is the Mormon cotton town that became a red-rock base. Brigham Young sent 300 families here in 1861 to grow cotton for the Utah Territory, and the 1867 tabernacle and the 1877 temple, the oldest in continuous use, are the inheritance. The town sits in a basin of red sandstone, with Snow Canyon State Park 10 minutes north and the west rim of Zion 40 minutes east, and the desert climate, hot but dry, makes it a year-round base when the rest of Utah is snowed in. The St. George Marathon, every October, is one of the fastest and most scenic in the US, a net downhill from the Pine Valley Mountains to town.
A weekend in St. George is a red-rock hiking weekend. Hike the Petrified Dunes at Snow Canyon, walk Pioneer Park at sunset, drive out to the west rim of Zion, and eat at Bear Paw Cafe. Come March through May or October through November, summer is over 100. Two nights lets you add Kolob Canyons, the quiet section of Zion, 30 minutes north.
