Why here

Overton is a town of 4,000 on the Muddy River, 60 miles northeast of Las Vegas, next to Valley of Fire State Park. The park, Nevada's oldest, is 46,000 acres of Aztec sandstone that glows orange at sunrise and sunset, with 2,000-year-old petroglyphs at Atlatl Rock. Overton itself is quiet, with a great local museum (the Lost City Museum, on the site of an Ancestral Puebloan village) and one of the best off-the-grid basecamps in the Southwest.

Valley of Fire is the reason, and it is the most photogenic park within an hour of Las Vegas. Nevada's oldest state park, 46,000 acres of 150-million-year-old Aztec sandstone, glows orange and red at the ends of the day, and the 2,000-year-old petroglyphs at Atlatl Rock and Elephant Rock are the human layer. Overton, the town next door, is the base, and the Lost City Museum, on the site of an Ancestral Puebloan village that was excavated in the 1920s before Lake Mead flooded the rest, holds the artifacts. The town is quiet and cheap, which is why it works as the off-the-grid alternative to the Springdale crowds, and Lake Mead's Overton Arm is 15 minutes away for the water.

A weekend in Overton is a red-rock-and-petroglyph weekend. Drive the Valley of Fire scenic road at sunrise, hike the Fire Wave Trail, visit the Lost City Museum, and rent a boat on Lake Mead. Come October through April, summer is over 110 degrees and there is no water in the park. Two nights lets you add the north shore of Lake Mead and a drive to the Muddy River hot springs.
