Why here

Boulder City is one of only two towns in Nevada where gambling is illegal, by charter. It was built in 1931 by the Bureau of Reclamation to house the workers building Hoover Dam. The downtown is 1930s company-town architecture, tree-lined streets, and a walking historic district. Lake Mead is 10 minutes away. It is the anti-Vegas, 30 minutes from the Strip.

Boulder City is the company town that stayed a company town. The federal government built it in 1931 to house the 5,000 men who built Hoover Dam, and the original charter banned gambling and alcohol, the better to keep a workforce sober. The gambling ban stuck, and when the town was turned over to the residents in the 1960s they voted to keep it, which is why Boulder City is one of only two Nevada towns without casinos, the other being Panaca. The 1930s downtown, the tree-lined streets, and the Boulder Dam Hotel are intact, and Hoover Dam and Lake Mead are both 10 minutes away. It is the closest town to Las Vegas that does not feel like Las Vegas.

A weekend in Boulder City is a dam-and-lake weekend. Tour Hoover Dam and the powerplant, walk the Historic Railroad Trail along the old dam-construction rail bed, and swim or boat on Lake Mead. Come October through April, summer is over 110 degrees. Two nights lets you add the Lake Mead marina and a drive out to Valley of Fire, 40 minutes east.
