Why here
Springdale is a town of 600 in southwestern Utah, sitting at the entrance to Zion National Park. The Watchman, a 6,545-foot sandstone peak, looms over main street. The town exists to serve park visitors, but it has evolved into a destination of its own, with galleries, a brewpub, and restaurants that would be at home in a bigger city. The free shuttle runs from town into the park, so you park once and leave the car.
Springdale is the gateway to Zion, and the park is the whole story. Zion, with its 2,000-foot sandstone walls and the Virgin River cutting through, is the third-most-visited national park in the country, and Springdale is the only town at the entrance. The Watchman, the 6,545-foot peak, frames the main street, and the free shuttle, which runs the length of town and into the canyon, means you park once and never move the car. The town has grown up around the park over 100 years, and the galleries, the brewpub, and the restaurants are better than a town of 600 has any right to, because they have a captive audience of 4 million visitors a year.
A weekend in Springdale is a Zion hiking weekend. Take the shuttle into the canyon, hike the Riverside Walk to the Narrows, and do the Canyon Overlook Trail on the east side. Come March through May or October through November, summer is over 100 degrees. Angels Landing now requires a permit, apply at recreation.gov. Two nights lets you add the east side of the park and the Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel.
