Why here
North Conway is a village of 2,300 in the Mount Washington Valley of New Hampshire, 2.5 hours north of Boston. It's the base for the White Mountains, with Mount Washington (6,288 ft) 20 minutes away. The village is 1880s Victorian, with the Conway Scenic Railroad and a mile of tax-free outlet shopping. The fall color peaks the first week of October and is among the most photographed in the US. In winter, eight ski areas are within an hour.
The village exists because of the railroad, which arrived in the 1870s and turned North Conway into a Gilded Age resort, the grand hotels are gone but the 1874 station and the Victorian main street remain. Mount Washington, 20 minutes north, is the highest peak in the Northeast and holds some of the worst recorded weather on Earth, 231 mph winds at the summit, so the cog railway and the auto road are how most people get up. New Hampshire has no sales tax, which is why the mile of outlet stores lines Route 16, and the fall color, peaking the first week of October, draws leaf-peepers from across the country.
A weekend in North Conway is a mountain-and-color weekend. Ride the Cog Railway to the summit of Mount Washington, hike the Echo Lake loop below Cathedral Ledge, ride the Conway Scenic Railroad, and shop the outlets in the evening. Come the first week of October for peak fall color, or January through March for skiing. Book 3+ months ahead for October, the leaf-peeper traffic backs up for hours.
