Why here

Banner Elk is a town of about 1,300 at 3,700 feet in the Avery County high country, nestled in the valley between Sugar Mountain and Beech Mountain, the two largest ski resorts in the Southeast. In winter it is the region's ski base; in the other three seasons it is a cool-air village of lodges, a small walkable downtown, and trailheads. The town's odd claim to fame is the Woolly Worm Festival, every October, where caterpillars race and the winning worm's stripes are taken as the winter forecast.

Grandfather Mountain rises 15 minutes away, with its Mile High Swinging Bridge and summit trails, and the Linville Gorge wilderness, the East's deepest canyon, is 25 minutes north with overlooks and waterfall trails around Linville Falls. Lees-McRae College gives the town a small-campus leafiness, and the Valle Crucis valley, with the state's first rural historic district and the original Mast General Store, is 15 minutes south.

A weekend in Banner Elk is a mountain-bowl weekend. In winter, ski Sugar or Beech; in fall, drive the ridgelines, ride the swinging bridge, and watch the woolly worms race. Come October for the color and the festival, December through March for snow. Two nights lets you add Linville Falls and a Valle Crucis morning.
