Why here
Yellow Springs is a village of about 3,700 in the Mad River valley between Dayton and Springfield, and it is unlike anywhere else in Ohio. A 19th-century spa town built around a mineral spring that gave it its name, it turned into Antioch College's college town, and the college's experiment in free thought shaped everything: a main street of murals, a co-op grocery, a record shop, a bookstore, and the kind of independent businesses that made it a destination for a certain kind of traveler. Dave Chappelle grew up here and still lives here, and his Summer Camp festival pulls comedians to the county fairgrounds every July.
The nature is the surprise. Glen Helen Nature Preserve, donated by Antioch in 1929, protects a limestone gorge behind downtown with waterfalls, the old spring itself, and 20 miles of trails through a cool, ferny ravine system. Next door, John Bryan State Park and the Clifton Gorge State Nature Preserve guard the Little Miami River as it cuts a dramatic dolomite canyon, with rim trails and a swimming-hole gorge walk.
A weekend in Yellow Springs is an arts-and-gorge weekend. Hike Glen Helen or Clifton Gorge in the morning, browse the main street's shops and murals in the afternoon, and end at Young's Jersey Dairy for ice cream and mini golf. Come September through November for gorge color, or May for wildflowers. Two nights lets you add a bike ride on the Little Miami Scenic Trail, which runs straight through town.
