Why here

Breckenridge was founded in 1859 during the Colorado Gold Rush, and the original clapboard Main Street is still intact, 100+ buildings on the National Register. Unlike Vail or Beaver Creek, which were built for skiing, Breckenridge was a town first. It sits at 9,600 feet, one of the highest incorporated towns in the US, with five peaks on the ski area and a free gondola that runs from the parking lots to Peak 7 and 8. Summer brings the trails, the 14ers, and a river that runs right through town.

Breckenridge is the ski town that was a real town first. The 1859 gold rush put 8,000 miners here, and when the gold played out the clapboard main street, 100-plus National Register buildings, was left behind. The ski area opened in 1961, on five peaks of the Tenmile Range, and the town grew back around it without bulldozing the historic core, which is why the main street still looks like 1880. At 9,600 feet it is one of the highest towns in the country, the ski area tops out at 12,998 feet, and the altitude is real, drink water and go slow the first day. The free BreckConnect gondola runs from the parking lots to Peaks 7 and 8, so you can park once and ski.

A weekend in Breckenridge is a ski-or-hike weekend. In winter, ski the five peaks and eat on Main Street. In summer, ride the Peak 8 SuperChair to 12,300 feet, hike the 14ers, and float the river through town. Come December through March or July through September. Leave Denver by 6am on winter Saturdays, I-70 backs up for two hours.
