Why here
Decorah sits in a valley in the Driftless Area, the corner of Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin that the glaciers missed, which explains the spring-fed creeks, the 400-foot bluffs, and the fact that you can hike to a waterfall ten minutes from a downtown of brick storefronts. It was settled by Norwegian immigrants in 1849, and the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum here has the largest collection of Norwegian-American artifacts in the world, spread across a dozen historic buildings.
The outdoor inventory is unusually good for a town of 7,600. Dunning's Spring is a 200-foot walk from the street to a waterfall pouring out of a limestone bluff, with the Ice Cave a few steps away. The Upper Iowa River runs through town, and the Decorah eagles nest, a livestream watched by millions, sits a few miles northeast. Seed Savers Exchange, the country's largest heirloom seed bank, farms a heritage orchard north of town.
And then there is the beer. Toppling Goliath Brewing has been rated among the best breweries in the world, which on its own pulls people onto the two-hour-plus drive from the Twin Cities and the three-hour drive from Des Moines. A weekend here is a waterfall, a museum, a hike, and a taproom. Nordic Fest in late July fills the town. Two nights is the minimum; the bluffs deserve a full day.

Questions & Answers
Decorah weekend FAQ
Decorah is about 190 miles northeast of Des Moines, roughly 3 hours via I-35 North, US-20 east, and IA-150 north.
Yes, if you give it two nights. At 3 hours it is the longest drive on this list, but Decorah pairs a real waterfall, the Vesterheim museum, driftless bluff hiking, and one of the country's most sought-after breweries.
The Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum holds the largest collection of Norwegian-American artifacts in the world, spread across historic buildings in downtown Decorah, with a folk-art school and a boat hall.
The nest itself is on private land north of town and is watched by a livestream, so viewing is usually from a distance or online. The nearby fish hatchery and Dunning's Spring are the easier wildlife stops.
Yes. A waterfall walk, the museum, a brewery afternoon, and a farm-to-table dinner on Water Street make a weekend that feels much farther away than three hours.
May through October, with late July for Nordic Fest and the fullest waterfall flow in spring. October brings bluff color; winter is quiet but the ice cave and the trout streams still draw people out.
