Why here

Stuart sits where the St. Lucie River meets the Indian River Lagoon, 90 minutes north of Miami. It has been named the Happiest Seaside Town in America, and it earns it, a walkable downtown with no buildings over 4 stories, a restored 1901 opera house, and a fishing fleet at the marina. It is the sailfish capital of the Atlantic, and the Gulf Stream runs 12 miles offshore.

Stuart is the old Florida that South Beach replaced, a mainland fishing and farming town with a restored brick downtown and no high-rises. The St. Lucie River and the Indian River Lagoon wrap the town on two sides, and Hutchinson Island, a bridge crossing east, holds 20 miles of uncrowded Atlantic beach. The sailfish run, December through April, is why the town calls itself the sailfish capital of the Atlantic, the Gulf Stream swings close to shore here and the fish follow it. The House of Refuge, the last of 10 shipwreck rescue stations built in 1876, sits on the beach at the north end of the island.

A weekend in Stuart is a river-and-beach weekend. Walk the downtown and the 1901 opera house, swim at Bathtub Reef Beach where a reef creates a calm wading pool, and cross to Hutchinson Island for the beach and the Elliott Museum. Come November through April for dry, warm weather. Two nights lets you add the neighboring beach town of Jensen Beach, 10 minutes north.

Stuart is about 105 miles from Miami, roughly 90 minutes via I-95 North.

Its walkable historic downtown, the Stuart Boat Show (largest on the East Coast), and its designation as the sailfish capital of the Atlantic.

October through December is prime. The summer humidity breaks, the Atlantic is still in the low 80s, and the winter crowds have not arrived yet, so hotel rates are at their lowest of the season.

Yes. The walkable downtown, the riverfront sunset walks, and the restored 1901 opera house give it a slower, more romantic pace than the beach towns south of it. The Sea Glass Inn is the couples' stay.

Yes. At 2 hours, Stuart is a relaxed old-Florida river weekend from Miami, with a restored brick main street on the St. Lucie River and uncrowded Atlantic beaches a bridge away.

Bathtub Reef Beach on Hutchinson Island, 10 minutes east, with a protective reef that creates calm, shallow water, plus Jensen Beach just north for a longer stretch of sand.
