Why here

Stillwater sits on the bluffs above the St. Croix River, 30 minutes east of Minneapolis on the Wisconsin border. It was Minnesota's first town, founded in 1843 as a lumber port, and the sandstone storefronts along Main Street date to the 1880s. The Stillwater Lift Bridge, a 1931 vertical-lift span, still rises for river traffic. The town climbs a steep bluff, with stairs connecting the riverfront to the residential hills above. Fall color on the St. Croix peaks in early October.

Stillwater is Minnesota's oldest town and the closest river escape to the Twin Cities. It was founded in 1843 as a lumber port on the St. Croix, the river that floated the white pine logs that built Minneapolis, and the 1880s sandstone storefronts on Main Street are the inheritance. The Stillwater Lift Bridge, the 1931 vertical-lift span that carried traffic across to Wisconsin until the new St. Croix Crossing opened in 2017, is now pedestrian-only, and the loop trail over the old bridge and back over the new is the river walk. The town climbs a steep bluff above the river, with a set of public stairs connecting the riverfront to the residential hills, and the St. Croix, a National Scenic Riverway, is why the fall color in early October is some of the best in Minnesota.

A weekend in Stillwater is a river-and-main-street weekend. Walk the lift-bridge loop, stroll the Main Street historic district, take a scenic boat cruise, and eat at the Freight House. Come May through October, or early October for the fall color. Two nights lets you add the wine trail of the St. Croix Valley and a drive up to Taylors Falls.
