Why here

Ohiopyle is a borough of about 60 people inside Ohiopyle State Park, 20,000 acres of Youghiogheny River gorge an hour and a quarter southeast of Pittsburgh, and it packs more outdoor density per square mile than anywhere in Pennsylvania. The river's Class III-IV rapids run right through town, drawing rafts and kayaks all summer. The 79-mile Great Allegheny Passage rail trail, Pittsburgh to Washington DC's spine, rolls straight down the town's main street. Cucumber Falls, one of the prettiest 30-foot waterfalls in the East, drops a ten-minute walk from the road. And Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater sits seven miles away in the same valley.

A weekend in Ohiopyle is a gorge weekend. Raft the Lower Yough with a guide on day one, walk Cucumber Falls and Ohiopyle Falls and the Ferncliff Peninsula in the afternoon, then spend day two at Fallingwater or Kentuck Knob and an easy bike ride on the Passage. Eat at Falls City or the Ohiopyle House, watch rafters from the riverside lawn, and sleep in a cabin or a trail-town guest room. Come May through October; October adds the best gorge color in western Pennsylvania. Two nights is the right pace, and summer weekends sell out, so book early.
