Why here
Midway is a town of 5,000 in the Heber Valley, 45 miles southeast of Salt Lake City at 5,300 feet. It was settled by Swiss immigrants in the 1860s, and the chalet-style homes and the Swiss Days festival every September still mark it. The Homestead Crater, a 55-foot limestone dome over a 90-degree mineral spring, lets you scuba dive or swim year-round. Deer Creek Reservoir and the Wasatch peaks ring the valley. Park City is 15 minutes over the mountain.
Midway is the Swiss town in Utah, and the heritage is real. The Swiss settlers who came in the 1860s built chalet-style homes with the steep roofs and carved trim that still line Main Street, and the Swiss Days festival, every September, is the 80-year-old town party with 200 craft booths and a parade. The Homestead Crater is the geologic oddity, a 55-foot limestone dome over a 90-degree mineral spring, the only warm-water scuba dive site in Utah, and you can swim in it year-round. The Heber Valley, with Deer Creek Reservoir and the Wasatch peaks, is the setting, and Park City, 15 minutes over the mountain, is the bigger draw next door.
A weekend in Midway is a crater-and-lake weekend. Swim or dive the Homestead Crater, sail or paddleboard Deer Creek, eat at Cafe Galleria, and if you come in September, hit Swiss Days. Come June through September or December through March for the ski. Two nights lets you add Park City, 15 minutes over the mountain, or the Alpine Coaster at Soldier Hollow.
