Encinitas: A walkable surf-and-yoga town where the bluffs, the gardens, and the taquerias do all the talking.

At a glance

Encinitas, California is a 30 min drive from San Diego, best visited June-October. Like La Jolla, before the price tags. Top things to do: Swami's Beach and the Meditation Gardens, San Diego Botanic Garden, Coast Highway 101 through Leucadia. Where to eat: Fish 101, Swami's Cafe, Leucadia Pizzeria. Stay at Alila Marea Beach Resort or Inn at Moonlight Beach.

Why here

Encinitas is a city of about 60,000 strung along Highway 101 at the top of San Diego County, where sandstone bluffs drop to a string of surf breaks with names like Swami's, D Street, and Grandview. It is the closest thing to a real beach town inside San Diego County: no high-rise hotels, a walkable old Leucadia and downtown core of taquerias, coffee roasters, and record shops, and a surf culture serious enough that Swami's is one of the most famous breaks in the state. The Self-Realization Fellowship, founded here in 1937, sits above Swami's with golden onion-domed towers and gardens open to the public.

The town is really three towns. Leucadia, the northern district, is the funkier one, with a canopy of eucalyptus and fig trees over Coast Highway 101, independent coffee and a nursery that started the local plant shop movement. Downtown Encinitas, around D Street and Moonlight Beach, is the family beach and the restaurant row. Cardiff, just south, has the reef break and the Kook statue that locals lovingly repaint. Above all of it, the Self-Realization Fellowship Meditation Gardens give you one of the best free garden-and-ocean views in California.

A weekend in Encinitas is a surf-and-taqueria weekend. Paddle or watch the morning glass at Swami's, walk the Meditation Gardens, eat lunch on Coast Highway 101, and end the day at Moonlight Beach. Come June through October for the warm water and dry mornings. Two nights lets you add the San Diego Botanic Garden and a slow morning in Cardiff.
