Why here

In 1962, Leavenworth was a collapsing lumber town. The residents voted to rebuild the entire downtown as a Bavarian village, Alpine architecture, nutcracker museums, and all. It sounds kitschy, and it is, but it also works: the setting in the Cascade Mountains is real, the beer is real, and the hiking trails leaving town are spectacular.

The Bavarian makeover was a survival plan. When the Great Northern Railway moved its operations away in the 1950s, Leavenworth nearly emptied, and in the early 1960s a local committee proposed re-skinning the whole downtown in Bavarian half-timber and lederhosen, with a nutcracker museum to anchor it. It pulled the town back from the edge, and today Leavenworth draws more than 2 million visitors a year. The setting sells it, the town sits in a granite-walled valley on Icicle Creek below the Cascades, and the Oktoberfest and the December Christmas lighting festival are the two big draws.

A weekend in Leavenworth is a hike-and-pretzel weekend. Do the Icicle Gorge loop in the morning, eat bratwurst at the München Haus beer garden, browse the nutcracker museum, and in October or December come for the festivals. Two nights lets you add the trails at Sleeping Lady resort or a drive up to Stevens Pass.
