Why here
Glen Rose is a town of 2,600 on the Paluxy River, 55 miles southwest of Fort Worth. In 1908, a flood exposed dinosaur tracks in the riverbed limestone, now protected inside Dinosaur Valley State Park, where you can wade and stand in real sauropod prints. Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, a 1,800-acre drive-through park with 1,100 endangered animals, borders the town. The 1890s downtown has limestone storefronts and the Somervell County Courthouse. The town calls itself the Dinosaur Capital of Texas.
The tracks are the headline, and they are real. The Paluxy preserves actual sauropod and theropod footprints from 113 million years ago, exposed in the limestone when the river runs low, and you can wade out and stand in them. When the river is high the tracks go underwater, so check the park flow gauge before you drive. Fossil Rim, the second draw, is one of the better conservation parks in the country, 1,100 endangered animals on a 1,800-acre drive-through where giraffes walk up to the car window. Together they make Glen Rose the best family-nature weekend within 90 minutes of DFW.
A weekend in Glen Rose is a dinosaur-and-wildlife weekend. Wade the Paluxy for tracks in the morning, drive the Fossil Rim loop in the afternoon, and cool off at Big Rocks Park on the river. Come March through May or September through November, summer is hot and the river can be too high for tracks. Book Fossil Rim online for the time slot, weekends fill.
