Why here
Granbury is a town of 11,000 on Lake Granbury, 35 miles southwest of Fort Worth. The 1885 limestone Hood County Courthouse anchors a square listed on the National Register, with 40+ preserved storefronts around it, mostly antique shops, restaurants, and wine bars. The lake, a 33-mile Brazos River reservoir, runs along the south edge of town. Jesse James is supposedly buried in the local cemetery under an alias, and the story still draws visitors. The town was settled in 1854 and the railroad arrived in 1887.
Granbury is the closest real small-town square to Dallas-Fort Worth, and it works because the square survived. Where most North Texas courthouse squares were paved over for parking lots in the mid-20th century, Granbury kept its brick storefronts, the 1886 jail, and the 1885 opera house, and rebuilt the lake boardwalk in the 2010s. The result is a town that does two things in one weekend, a walkable 19th-century center and a lake with a mile of public boardwalk, kayak rentals, and sunset over the water.
A weekend in Granbury is a square-and-lake weekend. Walk the courthouse square and the opera house, browse the antique shops and the wine bars, eat at the 1912 Paris Coffee Shop before the Sunday line, and spend the afternoon on the lake boardwalk or in a kayak. Come March through May or September through November for the best weather. Two nights lets you add the Revolver Brewing tour 10 minutes west.
