Why here

Chattanooga was once the 'Dirtiest City in America,' a title Time magazine gave it in 1969 for its air pollution. It cleaned up, reclaimed its Tennessee River waterfront, and is now one of the South's best small cities. Lookout Mountain rises 2,300 feet to the southwest, with Ruby Falls underground and Rock City on top. The Walnut Street Bridge, the longest pedestrian bridge in the world, spans the river. The choo-choo is here, the 1941 Glenn Miller song was about a real train.

The cleanup is the story. In 1969 the federal government named Chattanooga the worst-polluted city in the country, and over the next 40 years the town rebuilt its riverfront, opened the Tennessee Aquarium, converted the Walnut Street Bridge to a pedestrian-only span, and turned the old Terminal Station into a hotel with a vintage train in the lobby. Lookout Mountain, 2,300 feet, holds three attractions stacked vertically, Rock City on top, Ruby Falls underground, and the Incline Railway up the side. The Choo Choo, the Glenn Miller song, was a real passenger train that ran from Cincinnati, and the town still trades on the name.

A weekend in Chattanooga is a mountain-and-riverfront weekend. Do Ruby Falls and Rock City on Lookout Mountain, walk the Walnut Street Bridge at sunset, tour the Tennessee Aquarium, and walk the Riverpark. Come April through May or September through November, summer is hot and humid. Two nights lets you add a ride up the Incline Railway and the sunset view from Point Park.
