Why here
Lynchburg is a town of 6,500 in southern Tennessee, 90 minutes from Nashville, and the home of Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey. The irony is that Moore County, where Lynchburg sits, has been dry since Prohibition, you can't buy whiskey by the bottle in town, only on the distillery grounds. The distillery, opened in 1866, is the oldest registered distillery in the US and the largest American whiskey brand in the world. The town square is 1880s brick, with general stores that haven't changed in 80 years.
The whole town is one product. Jack Daniel learned to make whiskey from a Lutheran minister and opened his distillery in 1866, using the iron-free cave spring on the property, and the distillery has run continuously since, now the oldest registered distillery in the US and the largest American whiskey brand in the world. The dry county irony is real, Moore County has stayed dry since Prohibition, so you can taste on the distillery grounds but cannot buy a bottle in town. The 1880s brick square has changed almost not at all, with hardware stores, the candy shop, and Miss Mary Bobo's boarding house lunch, a family-style meal served since 1908. Jack Daniel is buried in the cemetery on the hill.
A weekend in Lynchburg is a whiskey-and-square weekend. Tour the Jack Daniel's distillery, walk the 1880s square, eat at Miss Mary Bobo's if you booked a year ahead, and eat BBQ smoked with barrel wood at Barrel House. Come April through May or September through October. The distillery tour sells out two months ahead, book early.
