Why here

Beacon was a factory town that bottomed out in the 1980s. Then in 2003, the Dia Art Foundation opened a museum in a former Nabisco box-printing factory, 300,000 square feet of contemporary art in skylit galleries. Main Street followed: galleries, coffee shops, and restaurants filled the empty storefronts. Now it's the Hudson Valley's art town.

Dia:Beacon is the anchor. Housed in a 1929 factory that once printed Nabisco cereal boxes, it holds one of the largest collections of postwar art in the country, Agnes Martin, Richard Serra, Robert Irwin, and Andy Warhol, in a building flooded with daylight through 34,000 square feet of skylights. Plan two hours minimum. The rest of Main Street is a half-mile of galleries, vintage shops, and bakeries that climbs from the Metro-North station to the mountain, with Beacon Mountain and its old incline railway ruins at the top.

A weekend in Beacon is an art-and-walking weekend. Do Dia in the morning when it opens, walk Main Street for lunch and galleries in the afternoon, and hike the Beacon Mountain trail for the best Hudson Valley view at sunset. The train from Grand Central drops you 80 minutes later at the foot of Main Street, so a car is optional. Two nights lets you add a day in nearby Cold Spring or Storm King Art Center, the sculpture park 20 minutes north.
