Why here

Cold Spring is a village of 2,000 on the Hudson River, 50 miles north of NYC. Founded in 1826 around the West Point Foundry, which made cannons for the Civil War, it has 200+ Federal and Greek Revival buildings on the National Register. Main Street is a half-mile of antique shops, restaurants, and galleries, walkable from the Metro-North station. You can take the train here in 80 minutes, no car required.

The foundry is the reason Cold Spring exists. The West Point Foundry, just south of town in a ravine called Foundry Cove, produced the Parrott rifle and other cannons that armed the Union Army, and at its peak employed 1,400 people. When the foundry closed after the Civil War, the town froze, which is why nearly the entire main street is intact. Today the foundry site is a peaceful nature preserve with ruins and a trail, and the town lives off antiques, weekenders, and the Metro-North.

A weekend in Cold Spring is the easiest car-free escape from Manhattan. The Metro-North Hudson Line drops you 80 minutes from Grand Central at the foot of Main Street, and everything is walkable. Shop the antiques, walk the riverfront, visit Boscobel House for the best Hudson River view of any historic home, and hike Little Stony Point at sunset for the view of West Point across the river. Two nights lets you add a day in nearby Beacon, 20 minutes south.
