Why here
Hood River sits at the confluence of the Columbia and Hood Rivers, where the Gorge narrows and the wind funnels through at 30 mph most afternoons. It's the windsurfing and kiteboarding capital of the US, but the town of 8,000 is more than that: a 35-mile Fruit Loop through pear, apple, and lavender farms, a craft beer scene that rivals Bend, and Mt. Hood rising 11,249 feet behind the town. You can windsurf, drink a pilsner, and pick cherries in the same afternoon.
The wind is the whole story. The Columbia River Gorge, cut through the Cascades by Ice Age floods, narrows at Hood River, and the temperature difference between the hot dry east side and the cool wet coast pulls a thermal wind through at 20 to 30 mph most summer afternoons, which made the town the windsurfing and kiteboarding capital of the country. The Fruit Loop, a 35-mile drive through the orchards of the Hood River Valley, is the other draw, with pears, apples, cherries, and lavender, and the craft beer scene, with pFriem and Full Sail on the waterfront, is the third. Mt. Hood, 11,249 feet, rises behind the town and is the snowmelt that feeds the river.
A weekend in Hood River is a wind-and-fruit weekend. Windsurf or watch the kiteboarders at the Event Site, drive the Fruit Loop, drink at pFriem, and drive 20 minutes west to Multnomah Falls. Come May through September when the wind and the fruit are both on. Two nights lets you add a drive up to Mt. Hood and Timberline Lodge.
