Why here

McMinnville is a town of 34,000 in the heart of Oregon's Willamette Valley, 50 miles southwest of Portland. It's the base for Pinot Noir country, with 20+ tasting rooms downtown and 100+ wineries within 20 miles. The town was a sleepy farm hub until the 1980s, when wine arrived. Now Third Street is a walkable stretch of tasting rooms, restaurants, and a wine-shop-every-block density you find only in Healdsburg or Sonoma. The Evergreen Aviation Museum houses the Spruce Goose.

McMinnville is the pinot capital of Oregon, and the story is a 40-year bet. The Willamette Valley, with its cool marine-influenced climate, turned out to be one of the best places in the world to grow Pinot Noir, and the growers who planted it in the 1970s and 80s, David Lett of Eyrie and the Drouhin family among them, put the valley on the world map. McMinnville, in the middle of the valley, became the tasting-room hub, with 20-plus rooms walkable on Third Street and 100-plus wineries within 20 miles. The other draw, the Evergreen Aviation Museum, holds the Spruce Goose, Howard Hughes's eight-engine wooden plane, the largest ever built, and an SR-71 Blackbird.

A weekend in McMinnville is a pinot-and-dinner weekend. Do a tasting-flight crawl down Third Street, eat at Nick's Italian Cafe and The Social, and spend a morning at the Evergreen Museum. Come May through October, or October for the harvest. Two nights lets you add the wineries of the Yamhill-Carlton and Dundee Hills sub-appellations, 20 minutes away.
