Why here

Galena was a lead-mining boomtown in the 1830s, its main street of brick storefronts was built before the Civil War and never demolished. 85% of the town is in the National Register of Historic Places. Ulysses S. Grant lived here. The mines are gone, but the architecture, the rolling hills, and the apple orchards remain.

The lead was the start. Galena sits in the Driftless Area, the corner of the Midwest the glaciers never flattened, so the hills and the lead deposits stayed put. By the 1830s Galena was producing most of the nation's lead, and its river port shipped more tonnage than Chicago. Ulysses S. Grant moved here in 1860 to work in his father's leather store, and the town gave him the house he returned to after the Civil War, the one he left to accept the presidency. Nine Civil War generals came from Galena, a fact the town still trades on.

A weekend in Galena is a main-street-and-hills weekend. Walk the 19th-century Main Street, tour Grant's home and the other historic houses, drive south to Casper's Bluff for the Mississippi view, and in fall, hit the apple orchards and the Driftless Area back roads. Stay two nights, the 3-hour drive each way is too long for a day trip, and the town is best in the early morning before the day-trippers arrive.
