Why here

Saugatuck has been an artists' colony since the 1900s, Chicago painters escaping the city for Lake Michigan's dunes. The town has one of the last hand-cranked chain ferries in the country (the captain turns a wheel to pull the boat across the river). The Oval Beach is regularly ranked among the best freshwater beaches in the US.

The town grew out of the Ox-Bow School of Art, founded in 1910 on a bend of the Kalamazoo River, where Chicago Art Institute students still come every summer to paint the dunes. That art-school origin set the tone, Saugatuck stayed small, gay-friendly, and gallery-focused while the rest of the Michigan coast built condos. Across the Kalamazoo River, reachable by the hand-cranked chain ferry, is Douglas, effectively the other half of the same trip, with its own walkable downtown and the chain ferry landing.

A weekend in Saugatuck is a beach-and-art weekend. Spend the morning at Oval Beach, the dune-backed stretch repeatedly ranked among the best in the country, ride the chain ferry across the river, browse the galleries and the art-school shops, and in the evening eat on the river. Come June through September when the water is warm. Two nights lets you add the farm country of Fennville, 15 minutes south, with cideries and U-pick orchards.
