Why here
New Buffalo is a town of 1,800 on the Lake Michigan shore, the first 'Harbor Country' town you hit crossing into Michigan from Indiana. The Four Winds Casino, opened in 2007 by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi, funds the town, and downtown is rebuilt with brick sidewalks and galleries. The beach is a mile of sand, the marina is one of the best on the lake, and Oinks Ice Cream has been a beach-day stop since 1978. It's the closest Lake Michigan beach town to Chicago.
Harbor Country is a string of five lakeside villages, New Buffalo, Union Pier, Lakeside, Harbert, and Sawyer, all within 90 minutes of Chicago, and New Buffalo is the gateway. The Four Winds Casino is the economic engine, but the town's appeal is the beach and the rebuilt downtown, with brick sidewalks, galleries, and a French bakery that draws weekenders from across the state line. The South Shore Line train runs from Millennium Station to Michigan City, 20 minutes away, so a car is optional for the last leg.
A weekend in New Buffalo is a sand-and-slow weekend. Spend the day on the mile of public beach, walk the marina, eat at the French bakery before 9am, and in the evening drive 10 minutes north to Union Pier for a quieter stretch of lake cottages. Come June through September when the water is warm. Two nights lets you work in the Galien River boardwalk and the casino without rushing.
