Why here
Founded by German settlers in 1846, Fredericksburg grew into the wine capital of Texas, over 50 wineries within a 30-mile radius, many within walking distance of Main Street. The town's German heritage shows in the biergartens and the Sunday polka at the dance halls. Enchanted Rock, a 425-foot pink granite dome, rises 18 miles south.
Fredericksburg was the heart of the German settlement of the Texas Hill Country, founded by a group of settlers who signed a peace treaty with the Comanche that held, which is why the town survived. The German heritage is real and living, the biergartens, the Sunday polka at Luckenbach, the sausage at Otto's, and the town grew into the wine capital of Texas because the limestone hills turned out to be perfect for Viognier, Tempranillo, and the Rhone grapes. Over 50 wineries are within 30 miles, many walkable from Main Street. Enchanted Rock, the 425-foot pink granite dome, is the region's geologic landmark, a billion-year-old batholith you can hike to the top of.
A weekend in Fredericksburg is a wine-and-Luckenbach weekend. Do a tasting-flight crawl on Main Street, hike Enchanted Rock at sunrise, eat at Otto's, and drive out to Luckenbach for the Sunday dance. Come March through May or October. Two nights lets you add the wildflower drives in spring or the wineries of the US-290 corridor.
