Why here

Marfa is a town of 1,700 in the high Chihuahuan Desert that became an art destination when Donald Judd moved here in 1971. Now it's a place where a single stoplight, a world-class contemporary art foundation, and an excellent Italian restaurant coexist. The Marfa Lights, unexplained glowing orbs seen east of town since 1883, remain unexplained.

Marfa is the most unlikely art town in America. It was an 1880s railroad water stop and a 1950s film location, James Dean's Giant was shot here, until the minimalist sculptor Donald Judd moved from New York in 1971 and turned two decommissioned Army forts into permanent installations of his work. The Chinati Foundation, his legacy, holds 100 untitled works in mill aluminum and installations by Donald Judd and Dan Flavin in converted barracks, and it draws a steady trickle of international pilgrims. The Marfa Lights, the unexplained orbs seen east of town since 1883, are the other draw, and the high desert light is the reason photographers keep coming.

A weekend in Marfa is an art-and-desert weekend. Tour the Chinati Foundation, watch for the Marfa Lights at the viewing area, eat at The Capri, and stay at El Cosmico or the Hotel Paisano. Come October through April, summer is brutal. This is a 3-day trip from Austin, not a weekend, the 6-hour drive is the cost of entry.
