Why here
In the heart of the Texas Hill Country, Wimberley is a town of 3,000 built around the Blanco River and Cypress Creek. The draw is water, Jacob's Well is a natural spring that descends 30 feet into an artesian cave system, and Blue Hole is a cypress-shaded swimming hole that has been drawing Texans for a century. No amusement parks, no outlet malls. Just limestone, water, and live oak.
Wimberley is the Hill Country swimming-hole town, and the water is the whole story. Jacob's Well, the artesian spring that bubbles up from a 30-foot cave, is one of the longest underwater cave systems in Texas and the most dangerous, with several diving deaths over the years, which is why swimming is now by reservation. Blue Hole, the cypress-lined stretch of Cypress Creek, is the classic Texas summer scene, rope swing and all, and the town grew up around it. The Wimberley Valley is the limestone-and-live-oak country that defines the Hill Country, and the artists' community, with the monthly Market Days, gives the town its second life.
A weekend in Wimberley is a water-and-slow weekend. Swim or hike at Jacob's Well, swim Blue Hole, eat at The Leaning Pear, and walk the square on a Saturday for Market Days. Come April through June or October through November, summer is hot but the water is the point. Two nights lets you add the wineries of Driftwood, 20 minutes east.
