At a glance

Mount Shasta, California is a 2 hr 45 min drive from Sacramento, best visited June-October. Like Bend, Oregon, with a bigger mountain. Stay at Mount Shasta Resort or Miranda Gardens.

Why here

Mount Shasta is a town of about 3,200 at the base of the mountain of the same name, a 14,179-foot volcano that rises 10,000 feet above the town and can be seen from 100 miles away. It is the classic straight-shot escape: 190 miles due north on I-5, and the mountain grows in the windshield the entire drive. The town itself is a small grid of family restaurants, crystal shops, and trailhead outfitters beneath the peak, with a reputation as a center for mountain-spirit seekers and, more practically, as the jumping-off point for waterfalls, alpine lakes, and some of the best spring skiing in California.

The mountain's lower slopes hold the treasures. Bunny Flat, at 6,950 feet, is the main trailhead and the summer ski base; Hedge Creek Falls, 20 minutes south in Dunsmuir, is a columned-basalt waterfall you can walk behind, and Mossbrae Falls pours out of a mossy wall beside the Sacramento River. Castle Lake, at 5,400 feet, is a cold, glassy cirque lake with a shoreline trail, and the Sacramento River itself begins in the town park, bubbling up from the mountain's snowmelt at 20 million gallons a day.

A weekend in Mount Shasta is a mountain-and-waterfall weekend. Hike or ski Bunny Flat on day one, chase Hedge Creek, Mossbrae, and Castle Lake on day two, and eat dinner with the peak filling every window. Come June through October for trail access, or December through April when some of the country's best backcountry spring skiing happens on the mountain. Two nights lets you add McCloud's falls trio 15 minutes east.
