Why here
Murphys is a town of about 2,200 in Calaveras County, built by immigrants from the Irish village of the same name during the 1850s gold rush, and known today as the heart of the Sierra Foothills AVA. Main Street is the whole show: whitewashed stone storefronts, an 1856 hotel, a babbling creek under stone bridges, and more than two dozen tasting rooms within a few blocks, pouring the Zinfandels and Spanish varieties that made the foothills famous. The town's microclimate, warm days and Sierra-cooled nights, ripens vines at 1,200 to 2,000 feet.
Beyond Main Street, the region is rich in reasons to stay a second day. Calaveras Big Trees State Park, 40 minutes northeast, protects a grove of giant sequoias discovered by gold miners in 1852. Ironstone Vineyards, just above town, pairs a tasting room with a concourse of gold-rush artifacts. And Mercer Caverns, discovered in 1885, runs guided tours through crystalline chambers 15 minutes from the hotel.
A weekend in Murphys is a wine-and-sequoia weekend. Spend day one on Main Street: morning bakery, tasting rooms, and a creek-side dinner. Spend day two at Big Trees or Ironstone, then return for one more glass. Come September through November for the harvest and fall color, when the vineyards turn gold and crush weekends fill the tasting rooms. Two nights is the honest minimum; this is the trip people cancel Sacramento plans to extend.
