Why here
Nevada City is a town of about 3,400 in the Sierra Nevada foothills, and its downtown is one of the best-preserved gold rush districts in California: 93 buildings on the National Register, brick storefronts from the 1850s and 1860s, and a self-guided gas lamp tour past the National Exchange Hotel and the Nevada Theatre, in continuous operation since 1865 and still showing films and live music. The town boomed on placer gold from Deer Creek, went quiet for a century, and came back in the 1960s as a counterculture and preservation stronghold, which is why the Victorians survived.
The Yuba River is the other half of the trip. South Yuba River State Park guards a chain of emerald swimming holes below granite boulders, with the 1862 Bridgeport covered bridge, the longest single-span covered bridge in the country, at the park's heart. In town, the Broad Street strip runs from the firehouse museum to the breweries and wine bars, and Empire Mine State Historic Park, in neighboring Grass Valley, preserves a 5,600-foot-deep hard-rock gold mine under 800 acres of gardens and trails.
A weekend in Nevada City is a history-and-river weekend. Swim the Yuba in the morning, walk Broad Street and the gas lamp tour in the afternoon, and catch a show at the Nevada Theatre at night. Come September through November for fall color along Deer Creek, or June for warm-water river days. Two nights lets you add Empire Mine and a Sierra wine tasting along the Feeney Lane corridor.
