Why here
Sutter Creek is a town of about 2,700 in Amador County, called the Jewel of the Mother Lode, and its Main Street is one of the most intact gold rush business districts in California: a walkable mile of 1850s brick buildings, iron-shuttered storefronts, balconied hotels, and old-time shops, backed by green foothill hills. Prospectors found gold here in 1848 on the creek named for John Sutter's sawmill partner, and the town mined continuously for a century before turning to antiques, inns, and wine.
Amador County is the secret wine region. Fifteen minutes east, the Shenandoah Valley holds dozens of small family wineries on rolling Zinfandel country, many pouring from vines more than 100 years old, with hilltop tasting patios and almost no traffic compared to Napa or Sonoma. In town, the Knight Foundry, an 1873 water-powered iron works, runs rare tours of the last machine shop of its kind in America.
A weekend in Sutter Creek is a main-street-and-wine weekend. Walk Main Street, browse the antiques and the candy shops, tour the foundry, and spend a Shenandoah Valley afternoon tasting old-vine Zinfandel. Come September through November for the harvest and warm fall days, when Amador's 1,400-foot elevation keeps afternoons mild. Two nights lets you add the Black Chasm Caverns and a Volcano town detour.
